Lake Views for January 2022
Posted: 31 January 2022
Nationally January has been a record breaking month. The first was the warmest new years day on record in Central London and, as a whole, the month has also been the sunniest and driest for most.
The first photograph I remembered to take was on 7 January at 09:50 and the weather appeared to be living up to what was to become the sunny trend for the month, while the dark decking everywhere, except under the willow tree suggest recent rain, but not too much of it.
Three days later and one sees much the same conditions, other than the light which has a spectacular golden hue. This shot was taken at 08:49 and the angle of the sun casts completely different shadows on the path leading away from the house, also the reflections in the lake are much crisper indicating a lack of wind.
Another two days on and we see the lake at 09:09 on the 12 January. We had a deep frost and the surface of the lake has that obscured glass look that renders reflections a blur rather than distorted.
Sunlight certainly warms any ground it touches. While, if anything, it had been a colder night than two days previously, the next view, taken at 10:29 on 14 January, shows how the willow blankets the area of decking under it and protects it from frost as it appears dry. While the run from the lamp post towards the house is dark, indicating it is wet. And then the decking across the back of the house is in the shadow of the hedge running along the dyke. That stops the sunlight reaching decking so it remains covered in frost. The surface of the lake is still more blurred than two days earlier indicating a deeper frost.
It's yet another frosty morning on 22 January. Taken at 09:10, the sun hasn't yet got the power to melt the frost and the reflections in the lake surface are as blurred as in earlier photographs.
