Ruston House

Go to Top Introduction

On 14 July 2019 we were granted permission to construct a temporary bridge onto our neighbour's land that would allow us to maintain a narrow strip along the opposite side of the dyke that forms our mutual boundary.

The neighbouring land was allotted to the poor of the parish as part of the arrangements under the parish's Enclosure Act of 1806, hence the name "The Poor's Allotment". Apart from maintaining the land, from time to time we also mount a wildlife camera on or pointing at the Poor's Allotment.

It's also worth mentioning that the dyke is the boundary of the "Broads National Park". Ruston House is just outside the park area!

You may notice that, in some years, this area of the site has relatively few posts. However, the photographic record was maintained and you can expect new material to be added when time is found. This means the new posts may appear anywhere and not just in the current year's page. The best way to ensure you miss nothing is to visit the What's New page where you can find how you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Roe Buck 10 May 2021 - Fox, Roe and Muntjac Deer

This week the action starts on Tuesday morning at 05:44 with a fox mooching around the debris near our bridge. A Roe buck appears briefly the following morning at much the same time. On Thursday at around 00:20 there's an interesting encounter between a fox and Muntjac deer. Friday brings us an extended sequence of a pair of Muntjac feeding. The clip ends with a pair of clips captured on Sunday. At 03:27 a fox travels through the camera's field of view and at 04:43 we catch a brief glimpse of a Roe buck.

Muntjac Deer 11 April 2021 - Pheasants, Squirrels, Muntjac and more

It's been a very busy week. with more to show than normal. It's difficult to know whether to include long clips with little actual action or those where if you blink you'll miss it. there's a bit of both in this week's collection. We seem to be fully into courtship season for Pheasants. There's been a little light snow during the week and an unidentified creature approaching the camera. If you can identify it I's love to know. One of the two second clips is of a dash by a squirrel.

Muntjac Deer 5 April 2021 - Muntjac, Pheasant, Cat and Squirrel

This week's captures were not dramatic, but did have a certain interest. There were numerous crossings of our bridge to the Poor's Allotment by Muntjac deer. In the first half of the week they seemed to be onto our land but this reversed towards the end of the week. There was a lot of browsing of vegetation as well. Early in the week the camera caught a female pheasant moving slowly across the field of view and at last couple of clips are of a ginger tom cat and a squirrel.

Chinese Water Deer 29 March 2021 - Roe and Chinese Water Deer

There's been a little more variety in the clips captured by the wildlife camera this week. To finish there's the usual meandering Muntjac, but we open with a galloping Roe Deer, disappearing into the distance. Between the two the rarer Chinese Water Deer and a squirrel make dashes across the frame in this set of clips that our wildlife camera captured. However, the Muntjac is a lot more relaxed and spends some time in the area.
